YA Series I Won’t Finish

Hi everyone! I’ve seen a few videos like this circulating booktube lately and thought it was a cool idea for a blog post! My reading taste has changed a lot recently and my TBR has grown to a ridiculous amount, so it’s time to start being honest with myself & admit there are just too many series I won’t be finishing.

I have too many to name in one post, so I tried to make this more of a “Popular YA Series I Won’t Finish.” If I include your fave series on here, please don’t get offended and attack me. This doesn’t mean I don’t like you, it just means I have 0 plans to finish the series for one reason or another. So, without further ado, let’s get started!

10. THRONE OF GLASS + ACOTAR by Sarah J. Maas

I read the first three books in the THRONE OF GLASS series about 3 years ago. I actually enjoyed the first two, and then I felt that the third when really downhill. After hearing what happened in QUEEN OF SHADOWS and after becoming more aware of how problematic the series was, I decided I didn’t want to waste my time nor my money continuing on.

I tried to read ACOTAR around the time ACOMAF was getting a lot of hype and I just didn’t understand the hype! I must admit, I only got around 50 pages into ACOTAR but it just wasn’t intriguing me and I thought I had better books on my TBR I could read instead. Sarah J. Maas just isn’t the author for me and I don’t plan to finish either of her current series nor read any of her future work.

9. ILLUMINAE by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I read this in March of last year and I actually really loved it. So, you’re probably wondering “if you loved it, why won’t you be continuing?” As much as I loved this book when I read it, I personally will not support Jay Kristoff. His approach to criticism of the racism in his solo book NEVERNIGHT was condescending and rude and I personally cannot in good conscience, support him. If this was by any other author, I would probably continue reading. Oh well.

8. RED QUEEN by Victoria Aveyard

This is another one I read early last year! I liked it when I read it, but as the months went by, I realised that it wasn’t very memorable. It was unoriginal in the way that it seemed to take ideas from other popular series and mix them all in one and quite honestly, I remember nothing about the characters. I’ve also heard some not so great things about later books in the series (such as shoddy PoC and LGBTQIAP+) rep, so I’d rather spend my money and time elsewhere!

7. LEGEND and THE YOUNG ELITES by Marie Lu

I actually own all of the books in both of these trilogies, but i don’t really plan on finishing them. I read LEGEND about 2 years ago and whilst I enjoyed it, I never continued the series for some reason. Too much time has gone past and my reading taste has changed so much since I read this that I feel I wouldn’t like it as much if I were to reread and continue the series.

I read THE YOUNG ELITES last year and also liked it, but wanted to wait until THE MIDNIGHT STAR was out and I could binge the rest of the series. By the time TMS was out, however, I’d lost interest in the series, and I’ve heard mixed things about the conclusion anyway. Whilst I don’t plan on finishing either of these series, I do plan on reading Lu’s next release, WARCROSS.

6. PERCY JACKSON by Rick Riordan

I know this is technically middle grade, but I figured I’d count it anyways. I think I would’ve loved this if I’d read it earlier in my life, but this is one of those series that I never really read as a kid and don’t really feel liked reading as an adult. I’ve heard great things about both this series and all of Rick Riordan’s work, and I absolutely love Greek mythology, but for some reason I just really don’t see myself reading these!

5. TRUTHWITCH by Susan Dennard

I read TRUTHWITCH when it first came out last year and wasn’t a huge fan. I found the first 100 pages to be super confusing and the worldbuilding done poorly. I told myself I’d continue the series when the second book came out, but similarly to RED QUEEN, I found that this wasn’t really memorable and I didn’t feel like continuing! I’ve heard some mixed things about the sequel, so I’m content in my decision not to continue!

4. THE 5TH WAVE by Rick Yancey

I read this one in 2014 when it was really popular on bookstagram. I liked it, but then I heard really mixed things about the sequels and decided to leave it for if I ever felt like continuing. It’s been like 3 years now and I still have no intentions of finishing. Also, I think I remember liking the movie more than the book so if I want to know what happens, I can always just watch those.

3. MARA DYER by Michelle Hodkin

THE UNBECOMING OF MARA DYER was such a weird book that I read in 2014. I own the other two in this series (they were gifts for Christmas from friends) but I wasn’t a huge fan and really don’t plan on finishing. I found the plot confusing and the writing okay but nothing really grabbed me. I also just really don’t think I’m going to enjoy it so I don’t see the point in wasting time.

2. THE LUX SERIES by Jennifer L. Armentrout

The running theme for all of the books on this list seem to be books I enjoyed at first and just lost interest in. This is no exception. I read the first 2 books in this series at the end of 2014 and whilst I enjoyed them, I didn’t really feel like binge reading the whole series. I have the 3-5 books at home, but over time I just lost interest and really don’t think I’d enjoy this series if I were to pick it up again now.

1. BLOODLINES by Richelle Mead

I’m actually really sad about this one. I binge read the entire VAMPIRE ACADEMY series before I joined the online bookish community and I absolutely loved it. It was during my vampire/paranormal phase and it was so much fun. I read BLOODLINES when it came out and planned to continue the series, but I wanted to wait until all of the books were out so I could binge read them all at once. Somewhere along the way and over the years, I just lost interest in the series and I just don’t think I’ll ever pick it back up again. I loved VA so much so I think this is also a case of me worrying it won’t live up to my own expectations. If I’d maybe started the series after all of the books were out, I may have read them all, but no one will know now!

A Book Series I Wish I Didn’t Finish 

THE RAVEN CYCLE by Maggie Stiefvater

I still get mad every time I think about this series. I know that this is a very beloved series in the YA book community, but damn, that ending was so disappointing! I actually enjoyed the first 3 books, but the last book ruined it for me. I felt that the things that happened in TRK, the plot twists and everything just made the whole series a waste of time and money. That’s not even to mention the racist joke Pynch makes in the last book. So whilst this isn’t a series I put on this list because I don’t plan on finishing it, it is a series I wish I hadn’t finished!
